1 Response to Driving a tram

  1. Pauline English (Sandgrown)

    In the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.
Trams used to run from the Royal Oak (outside the Palladium cinema) down Waterloo road to the Oxford, then along Whitegate Drive to Devonshire Square, up Church Street to the Opera House and St.Johns church, then turn into Abingdon street and down Clifton Street to their terminus in Talbot square. The tram seats were then “reversed” and the tram would return on the same route back to the Royal Oak in South Shore. At times, two trams would pass each other going in opposite directions - other vehicle drivers had to be very alert and very patient, and pity any cyclist who got their wheels stuck in the tram track!
